Since when is politics a barrier in modern love? When I was dating years ago, someone might mention in passing that he was a conservative or liberal. But today, thanks to the polarized political environment, it’s a major issue. Just check out online profiles: “If you voted for Trump, swipe right”, and “If you’re a liberal, better pass me by.” Politics is not on my mind when I start online dating. I just want to meet a nice man with whom to have fun, experience new things, share my life.
I’m hopeful about my upcoming date with Ted (not his real name). He’s a lawyer and a dentist, so he must be very smart. We agree to meet for lunch.
At first, it seems to go well. We chat pleasantly about our backgrounds, our families, and what kind of people we are meeting on dating websites.
Then the subject of politics comes up.
A Horse of a Different Color
“You may be wondering if I’m a Trump supporter,” he begins, scanning my face for a reaction. “Well, I’m kind of liberal, but it’s okay if you’re not. It’s important to be respectful of different points of view,” I say politely.
He starts hammering the Democrats as “idiots” and “elitists”. I am uneasy. “I respect your point of view,” I repeat, “but would you mind if we talk about something else?” But this guy can’t shut up.
My Way or the Highway
I can’t believe you’re a Democrat, he keeps saying. “I even read the New York Times every day,” I say lightly, trying to defuse the tension. But this only sets him off. “What they print is so distorted and untrue! I bet you even watch CNN,” he accuses. By now, I’m getting mad. I nod defiantly. “You’re blind. Don’t you realize that?” he shouts. I bristle and check my watch under the table. How fast can I get out of here? I feel like I’m trapped in a dating nightmare.
A Hasty Retreat
Finally, to my great relief, the waiter brings the check. Sorry, gotta run, I have to go grocery shopping, I lie. I dash to my car and drive off. The moment I get home, I go to my computer and add a sentence to my online profile: “I’m a Democrat”.
